Dentistry in Goa is synonymous with Dr. Hubert Gomes whose state-of-the-art clinic in Margao has become a household name in the entire state. After a short tenure as a teacher at Goa Dental College, young Dr Hubert Gomes opened his first Private Surgery (Clinic) in a very small office, on 14th February 1984. "At that time, I started with the basic equipment," recalls Dr Gomes. But his dream to serve people and be reckoned as a people's dentist, "who not only FILLS tooth cavities but also who FEELS for his patients," as Dr Gomes puts it, helped him in setting up this clinic whose founding principle is, "To be honest in all our dealings and work towards providing a high quality, painless and affordable dentistry to all our patients."
Today, the clinic has become very famous for dental implants and ceramic veneers. "According to many leading Suppliers of dental implants, we are probably doing the doing maximum number of dental implants in India today. Their assessment is probably based on the fact, that, besides the local and overseas patients (foreigners), we have a lot of patients from different parts of India who come to us for dental implant treatment 365 days of the year," informs Dr Gomes.
Dr. Gomes takes pride in the installation of Goa's first Dental Microscope (from Carl Zeiss - Germany) which enables dentists to see patients' teeth 25 times bigger and treat the same with 25 times more precision.
Besides him, a talented team of specialists conduct varied treatments including Painless Root Canal Treatment (RCT), Implants, PERIO (Treatment of bad breath, bleeding gums & loose teeth), Oral Surgery, Orthodonita (Correction of crooked/Protruding teeth), Children's Dentistry, Teeth Whitening (Bleaching). If you have smart, innovative ideas in mind, then those ideas can soon become a reality for you or at least their implementation can be made much easier. That is what Dr Hubert Gomes, a dentist by profession, strongly believes in.
After completing his five-year BDS course, Dr Gomes opened his dental clinic in Margao in 1984. In the course of time, he started getting several patients and he progressed in his profession merely by the word of mouth publicity of his patients. And he admits that every year the number of patients at his clinic is growing.
Dr Gomes proudly states that earlier it was a one-man show; but today he has a team of 10 dentists and 18 staff-members, catering to several dental needs of his patients. In the past couple of years, he has introduced two defining things in the field of root-canal treatment and pediatric dentistry.
Elaborating more on pediatric dentistry, Dr Gomes said most dentists are not trained to treat children. “Hence it becomes difficult to handle children with tooth problems. The specialists in pediatric dentistry are post-graduates in that field and they are trained both, to understand the psychology of the child and to treat the child more efficiently,” he added.
At his clinic, the experienced dentist Dr Gomes, not only provides treatment to the locals, but also to the national and international patients. One will find several foreigners flocking to his clinic in order to receive dental treatment. When asked about the secret behind such heavy response, Dr Gomes humbly says, “Sincere work, fair pricing and honest dealings has helped me to win the trust and confidence of my patients”.
Focusing on the same topic, Dr Gomes stated that many foreigners have told him that they have been charged very high fees by some of the dentists in Goa, especially by those along the coastal belts. He is of the opinion that if this unfortunate “greed for money” continues, then in the long run medical tourism will suffer in Goa.
To provide the best of dental treatment, Dentist have to invest in the best of modern equipments. When asked how he manages to cope up with the expenditure incurred, he discloses that if the management is good and you have good administrative skills, then the investment can be easily overcome. “However, if you fail to manage things professionally, then there is always the tendency to overcharge people,” he feels.
When asked whether he has encountered any competition in his profession, Dr Gomes says that competition does not really bother him at all.” Every year there is an increase in the quality and quantity of patients coming to my clinic. I enjoy competing with myself,” he quips.
On humanitarian grounds, Dr Gomes has helped many financially poor patients by reducing costs or even providing free treatment. When asked about future plans, Dr Gomes said that he intends to start “Dental Insurance Plans” for his patients. It will help to bring down the cost of dentistry.
